The Breeds

If you ever get a chance to visit us here at the farm you'll be able to see the variety of breeds we have in our herd. From our light bodied, medium sized Guernseys to our smaller sized, very active Jerseys we have always chosen our breeds with the interest of making the best possible yogurt in mind. Being sure to work with them gently has taken away any timid nature they may have had with strangers, making me feel confident when I say that you would enjoy coming to meet them. If you do get a chance to visit us, in all likelihood, one or two of them will probably even come over just to check you out.

Until the 90's when we started breeding Jersey cattle, our herd was solely purebred Guernseys. Known for their golden colored milk and gentlest of dispositions, they are by far the sweetest, of any breed I've worked with. Due to our switch to Jerseys though, our Guernseys are no longer purebred which makes most of our herd now a cross between the two. The only purebreds left being Jerseys.

The main reason we made the decision to switch to Jersey is because their milk has the highest percentage of butterfat and protein. The importance of this is the fact that this kind of milk enables us to make our yogurt without adding additional thickeners, like pectin or dried milk. Jerseys are good grazers and have a very curious nature. For example, if perchance a gate is left open or a fence is broken, you can be sure one of the Jerseys will be the first to find it.

In addition to Our Guernseys and Jerseys we also have some Holstein blood in our herd. Holsteins are the standard commercial dairy breed. They are the black-and-white cow commonly seen in advertisements. So you should know that on your trip here, any of the black cows that you see are of that famous Holstein lineage.

Although we are open year round and encourage you to come see us, The best time for a visit would be when the weather isn't to hot and when it hasn't been raining. This way the cows will be looking there best and you will be able to have the most enjoyable experience we have to offer.
